The lease is signed. The boxes are packed. Is everything protected?

Your young adult is moving into their first apartment. Here’s what both of you need to know before move-in day.
Renters insurance

Remember when your biggest job was making sure the kids packed their lunch and got to school on time?

Now they’re signing their first lease and picking out furniture.

It’s an exciting milestone. But between security deposits, utility bills, and moving boxes, one important item often gets overlooked: insurance.

Most young adults don’t know what coverage they need.  Truthfully, many parents aren’t sure what coverage their young adult needs either.

 That’s why we’re here.

At McGlynn Insurance Advocates, we’re more than an insurance agency. We’re your advocate. We’ll help you understand your options, avoid costly gaps in coverage, and make sure your young adult starts this next chapter with the right protection in place.

We asked young professionals if they had renters insurance.

One of the biggest misconceptions among young adults is believing their landlord’s insurance protects their belongings. It doesn’t. A landlord’s policy protects the building. Your young adult’s belongings are their responsibility.

What renters insurance actually covers.

For someone just starting out, replacing everything after a fire, theft, or water damage event could be a significant expense. Renters insurance helps provide protection when the unexpected happens.

A renters insurance (also known as tenant insurance) policy can help cover:

  • Personal belongings such as laptops, clothing, furniture, and electronics.
  • Liability protection if someone is injured in the apartment.
  • Temporary living expenses if a covered event makes the apartment uninhabitable.
  • Personal items stolen from your vehicle, such as backpacks, laptops, sports gear (subject to policy terms and limits).

Learn more about renters or tenant insurance and why it may be worth discussing before your young adult moves out of the house.

Before move-in day, review these coverages too

  • Auto Insurance
A new job or a longer commute can mean it’s time for a quick coverage checkup.
  • Valuable Belongings
That laptop, bike, guitar, or favorite piece of jewelry may be worth more than they think and needs protecting, too.
  • Personal Liability
If someone is injured on your property and claims you’re responsible (such as a delivery person slipping on an icy walkway) personal liability coverage can protect you.
  • Identity Theft & Cyber Protection
From online banking to job applications, young adults live much of their lives online. This coverage can help protect them from today’s digital risks.
  • Umbrella coverage

For added peace of mind, an umbrella policy provides an extra layer of liability protection beyond the limits of your underlying policies.

Ways to save

Bundling renters and auto insurance can often qualify young adults for a multi-policy discount. In some cases, the savings can offset a significant portion of the renters insurance premium.

Why having an advocate matters.

Most young adults are focused on jobs, rent, and settling into a new routine, not insurance coverage.

Parents want to help, but often aren’t sure what protections their son or daughter actually needs.

That’s where McGlynn comes in. As your advocate, we’ll help you make sense of what’s covered and what’s not. We’ll explain things in plain English and help your family make informed decisions that set your adult on the road to success.
