Winter getaways are sweeter with a welcoming home.

Protect your home before you head out this month.

As wonderful as getting away can be, there’s nothing quite like coming home, to familiar rooms, cozy warmth, and quiet comfort. Opening the door and finding everything exactly as you left it brings a sense of reassurance that’s hard to beat.

Before you travel, take these few simple steps to winterize your home, so it’s ready to welcome you back.

Keep the heat on

It’s tempting to turn the thermostat way down before a winter trip, but your home still needs warmth. You’ll also appreciate returning to a warm home instead of a deep winter chill.

Set your heat to a consistent temperature, at a minimum of 65 degrees, to help prevent frozen pipes and other cold-weather issues.

Give pipes extra care

Frozen pipes are one of the most common winter home issues. Before you leave:

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Insulate exposed pipes in basements, garages, and crawlspaces.
  • For pipes at risk of freezing (both hot and cold), let water drip slowly from faucets.

Unplug what you don’t need

Winter storms can bring power surges. Unplugging non-essential electronics reduces fire risk and gives your home a well-earned break while you’re gone.

Ask someone to check in

Even the most prepared homes benefit from a human touch. Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to:

  • Pick up mail.
  • Check the heat.
  • Look for anything unusual before it becomes a bigger problem.

Don’t forget the little things

Small precautions make a big difference in the winter.

  • Clear gutters so melting snow can drain.
  • Set lights on timers for a lived-in feel.
  • Double-check doors and windows, even the ones you rarely use.

Taking these simple steps helps ensure your home is cared for while you’re away.  If you have questions about winter home protection, coverage, or prepping your home before traveling, we’re always here to help.
